Send a Different Kind of Holiday Cheer, And Also Support Disaster Recovery Efforts

MADISON, Wis.–The World Council of Credit Unions has partnered on a new project called “Project Storm Break” that aims to raise funds by redirecting money that would otherwise be spent on printed holiday cards toward disaster relief.

Project Storm Break encourages a donation to the World Council’s General Disaster Relief Fund, with a goal of raising $100,000. The Project still allows the individual to send a cheerful holiday card, but in this case an e-card that raises funds.

The World Council and The Co-op Credit Union in Manchester, England, have partnered on the effort to “convey the vital importance of planning ahead and responding to international disaster relief before it strikes, no matter where it is.”

“Project Storm Break is the international credit union and cooperative movement's response to getting ahead of the storm, so to speak in providing relief, volunteerism and technical expertise to get credit union systems and their members, back on their feet, living their daily lives as quickly and seamlessly as possible,” the World Council said.

How to Participate

To help raise funds and participate in Project Storm Break:

  • An individual makes an online contribution at www.woccu.org/give and designates the gift to the "Project Storm Break" fund.
  • The individual selects and download to their PC one or several e-holiday cards.
  • The individual cuts and pastes the template holiday message to make their message extra special.

Participants are being urged to share their Global Good work using social media by using #ProjectStormBreak and tagging its key partners, @WOCCU & @CoopCreditUnion
Project Storm Break was borne out of a Credit Union Development Education project by Andrew Davey, operations manager at The Co-op Credit Union.
